Villain Disneybound Challenge
Happy fall and spooky season!
Welcome to part two of the disneybound collaboration challenge with Cassie Creley of Starlight in the Storm. Last time we did our favorite princess and this time we are “bounding” our favorite Disney villain. While this was another close call, I decided to go with a classic favorite of mine—the Evil Queen from Snow White! Only, based on Once Upon a Time’s version!
The Inspiration
These are some pictures of Regina as The Evil Queen in all her villain glory. As you can see, she sports lots of black, lace, and shades of deep red. I decided to take elements from these costumes—the lace texture, the pops of red, and lots of black in my ensemble.
The Costume
As you can see, I went with her signature colors—lots of black and a little pop of wine red. Because she wears a lot of lace and layers, I decided to add fishnet stockings and a subtle black veil to the ensemble. And of course, I needed a red apple to be her signature prop!
The main vibe of the disneybound, which is a contemporary interpretation of the character, was edgy and a bit goth. I wanted the look to carry over that creepy Evil Queen essence while still being somewhat stylish and posh.
So now, let me get into the three reasons why I picked Once’s version of the Evil Queen as my villain disneybound!
1.) Her Story
Personally, I think that Once Upon a Time incredibly portrayed the Evil Queen, or Regina, as a captivating and multidimensional villain. I most appreciate about her origin story. The show nailed her progression from naive, lovestruck teenager with an overbearing mother into a brokenhearted and ultimately vengeful woman.
The original tale portrays the Evil Queen as a one-dimensional villain whose sole motivation to hunt down Snow White was her own vanity and jealousy. Once Snow White replaced her title as “fairest of them all,” the original Evil Queen becomes obsessed with killing her no matter the cost. Once’s version shows Regina’s gradual escalation into the Evil Queen after a series of heartbreaks and temptations that lead her to seek revenge on Snow White. I find Once’s version far more interesting.
I most love the redemption of Regina’s character as she heals and relents from her desire for revenge over time. The betrayal and heartbreak she faced were never excuses for her actions—but they help explain how she got there.
2.) Her Vulnerability
Regina is one of the most layers and complex villains I know (Maleficent as a close second). Even after making a series of decisions that continue to harden her heart and strip her humanity, she maintained one particular vulnerability—her love for her adopted son, Henry.
Regina was not the healthiest parent but she truly loved Henry. When she seemed to be too far down the path of evil and everyone gave up hope for her, Henry alone could reach her. Henry’s love and devotion to Regina, in spite of all she did, ultimately enabled her transformation.
3.) Her Vibe
Ultimately Once Upon a Time’s version of the Evil Queen is just totally badass. Her elaborate wardrobe and creative flair commands attention. I don’t believe she ever even repeats an outfit! So if is any villain to disneybound for the sake of costume and aesthetic alone, it is her!
That’s all!
Well I hope you enjoyed this villain disneybound! Please go check out Cassie’s post and see what villain she chose to “bound”!
So who is your favorite Disney villain and who would you dress up as? I would love to hear!
